Robin Frood Scuola Internazionale di Grafica

Mokuhanga with Robin Frood

Friday 7 October 2022
10am – 5pm

With Robin J. Frood
Assistant Alessia De Bortoli

Mokuhanga is the name of the Japanese woodblock printing technique used in the first half of the 19th century by the artists Hokusai, Utamaro and Hiroshige. Unlike western woodcut, it uses water-based inks and rice starch, which are spread on the plate by brush. The print is done by hand using a bamboo covered disc called a baren.

Recently Mokuhanga has seen a great international renaissance among contemporary artists who appreciate its versatility and simplicity as well as the fundamental fact that is the use of natural and ecological materials.

More information

The workshop will begin with a short demonstration of the process. Each participant will have the opportunity to create a series of prints on Japanese paper, exploring in particular the expressive possibilities of the technique.

The Scuola will provide a wooden tablet, the pigments, the materials for the creation of the inks and a sheet of Japanese paper for printing. (If you have tablets already processed with the xylographic technique, they can be reused).

Participants are invited to bring with them:

  • Flat brushes of different sizes;
