Program

Guided by the reflections of light and color on the waters of Venice, each participant will carve wooden blocks and print them using the baren, the traditional Japanese hand tool, while experimenting with watercolors and natural pigments. Using horsehair brushes, we will explore the delicate layering of colors and print on fine washi paper, made from the long fibers of the mulberry tree. Working side by side, we will produce a series of small-format prints that play with the contrasts of light and shadow—echoing the balance of day and night unique to this time of year. In the final stage, through simple paper-assembly techniques, individual prints will be brought together into a larger collaborative piece: a poetic representation of the luminous and shadowy waters of Venice, celebrating the autumn equinox of 2025.

Lucy May Schofield

Lucy May Schofield is an artist originally from Lincolnshire, currently living and working in the wide, remote landscape of rural Northumberland. A graduate of the London College of Printing, she later deepened her study of Japanese woodblock printing (mokuhanga) and book arts in Japan. Her intuitive practice explores a somatic relationship with the land, working with a palette composed of light and time. Through performative interventions on paper and expanded printmaking practices, her work becomes a meditation on material and the gesture of making as a contemplative act. She is a council member of the Royal Society of Painter Printmakers, where she holds elected associate membership. Her work has been exhibited internationally, including at Kentler International Drawing Space (Brooklyn, NY), 3331 Arts Chiyoda (Tokyo), and the Royal Academy of Arts (London). Living in a remote location has allowed her to observe the behavior of weather and time nourishing a poetic reflection on the transient nature of our existence.
